New armor arrived. This time a late 16th century Japanese armor. We want to let the general audience know the difference between Chinese and other Asian armor. This is handmade replicas and it’s about 30lbs. Made of metal, really nice. Still don’t know how to wear it yet lol we have a Mongolian and a Tang/Song dynasty armor coming still. #silkroad #armor #asian #livinghistory #japanese
Did you know that ancient battlefield weapons secretly survived for centuries as sacred temple art? 🤯⚔️
Swipe left to see this historical puzzle! ➡️
The first image shows our authentic handmade historical replica of the Huan Shou Dao (环首刀). This straight, ring-pommel weapon dominated battlefields from the 2nd Century BCE Han Dynasty all the way to the Song Dynasty (13th Century), deeply influencing sword designs across Korea and Japan.
The second image is a rare 19th-century Buddhist underdrawing (dated 1828) depicting King Oeryun, the 10th Judge of the Underworld.
By the 1800s, real battlefield swords had evolved to become shorter and curved due to nomadic cavalry warfare. Yet, the artist chose to draw the King holding a completely straight blade mirroring our replica.
This is a technique called artistic archaism. The monk-painters intentionally rejected modern military trends, reaching back to ancient geometries to make the King look sacred, timeless, and powerful. 🐉✨
Want to see this drawing in person? It is on display at the The Cleveland Museum of Art Cleveland Museum of Art starting October 11 as part of the Ten Kings of Hell exhibition! 🏛️

This Song dynasty–style Fanyang li is a broad-brimmed military hat designed for outdoor wear, with chin cords to hold it securely while riding or moving. The vivid red plume adds a commanding martial finish inspired by historical Chinese military dress.
